Of the three islands that make up Indonesia, coffee has been growing in Java since the late 17th century. As the tale goes, coffee cherries and seeds were smuggled over from Yemen by the Dutch colonials and planted in Java. The plants adjusted rapidly and have had over three centuries to thrive and produce extraordinary yields. Java started its major coffee export in the early 1700s and soon became one of the largest coffee exporters in the world. So much so that the name Java has become synonymous with coffee. Its unique cocoa and tobacco flavors have made sure that most of the world's famous blends are created using coffee from Java.
